Let's get Witchy!
For many people starting out, witchcraft can seem overwhelmingly complex. In fact, 'arrggg, where do I even begin!?' is one of the most common questions we get asked in our instagram DMs.
We get it, the topics covered by the umbrella term 'witchcraft' are vast and complex, the resources available are spread out and difficult to connect, and often it's a case of 'who can I trust? Does the random blog article you found via google offer reliable information? Who actually wrote that book you bought on Amazon and let's not even get started on the thousands of spammy pins up on Pinterest that end up linking to a sales page for psychic services or dodgy tarot card readings.
We've been there, we know what it's like, trust us. That's the reason we started our Instagram page in the first place. We wanted to demystify and clarify at least a portion of the muddy online soup that falls under the topic of 'witchcraft'. Bringing some light to the bits that are confusing, contradictory, and downright incorrect, helping you to feel empowered and connecting you with trustable sources!
So, without further ado, here's a list of our top tips for beginner witches. Enjoy and leave us a comment below if you have any questions.
We cannot say it often enough, your intuition is going to put you on the right path. Learn to listen to it. If you feel like something comes across as a little bit off, it's probably because it is. Do you get a weird vibe about that person who popped up in your DMs offering you access to an 'exclusive coven'? Um, probably because it's a scam and your intuition already knows it. We'll say it again: listen.to.your.intuition.
Your intuition is the way. Your intuition is the path of clarity. Your intuition is your guide.
What made you want to get into this in the first place? Maybe you experienced some kind of 'trigger' moment where you suddenly felt drawn to the topic. Or maybe it's been simmering in the back of your subconscious mind for years and you've finally given yourself permission to explore it.
Reflect on what drew you here and use that as your starting point. Does the thought of sitting in a crystal cave give you goosebumps? Or maybe you've always felt drawn to the moon? Do you love the thought of working with herbs? Does the idea of finding your own personal source of power seem intriguing? These are your clues. This is your intuition letting you know where you should start. Take the thing, the topic, the idea that most excites you, and start there. Read a blog post about it, find an Instagram account that posts about it, take a class. Whatever door opens, that's the room that you should be walking into.
To follow your intuition and your path of greatest excitement means embodying the idea of becoming the explorer. You are an explorer. The path is the way and the way is the path. There is no destination. Keep an open mind, be gentle with yourself and be prepared to change your mind. The explorer doesn't stay in one spot and say 'I'm done with exploring, this is my final destination. She keeps moving as new ideas, opportunities, and doors open for her. Witchcraft is the way of the explorer and your intuition and your excitement are your guides.
Don't feel the need to define yourself. The explorer is in a continual state of becoming. Just because you felt like a crystal witch yesterday, doesn't mean you need to define yourself as one today. Move with what moves you.
Note: this doesn't give you permission to be flakey. It means being true to the most authentic version of yourself, whatever that might be. It means being unafraid to be 'weird, to say no, to change your mind. It does not mean constantly changing your mind because you are trying to please or because you're afraid of being your authentic self.
Generally speaking, unless someone asks you for advice, don't offer it. You are responsible for your own path. Everyone else is responsible for theirs.
Yes, you might have found THE PERFECT way to cast a spell. For you. That doesn't mean it's perfect for anyone else. If someone asks you to share, by all means, go ahead. But don't tell other people how they should or shouldn't practice. That's their business. You stick to yours.
This is your journey, do it at your own pace. There's no timeframe. There's no calendar. There are no deadlines. Haven't done a spell in months? Doesn't make you any less of a witch. Forgot what moon phase we're in? Doesn't make you less of a witch. Don't have an altar, a bunch of herbs in cute lil jars, and a sparkling crystal collection? Doesn't make you less of a witch.
Witchcraft is what happens on the inside. Everything else is just decoration. And the only schedule you need to follow is your own.
Yes, there's a whole bunch of self-proclaimed witches all over social wearing cool outfits, showing off their crystal collections, and buying fancy stuff for their altars. That doesn't mean you need to. I like modern architecture, shiny marble, high-tech electronics, and don't wear black (well not often anyway). Doesn't make me any less of a witch. Just because you don't live in a Cornish cottage with a bunch of black cats and two pet ravens doesn't mean you're not just as 'witchy' as the person who does. Okay, okay, what's your point Amythest? I guess my point is, be you, your most witchy self is your most authentic self. Regardless of whether you wear black, sparkles, or nothing at all.
